Cycling to help London reduce carbon emissions
Carbon emissions in London are being cut as more people in the capital are being encouraged to cycle to and from work.According to Transport for London (TfL), jumping on a bike has a `huge role` to play in reducing the carbon footprint made by travellers.Last month the Mayor of London announced a new central London bike hire scheme, designed to encourage commuters to cycle around the capital. The initiative predicted that if one in ten Londoners made a round trip of commuter cycle routes each day, some 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions would be saved.A spokesperson for TfL, which is implementing Mayor Boris Johnson`s transport strategy, added that cycling could reduce congestion and tackle the growing strain being placed on London`s increasingly busy transport system.Challenges include working with the large number of organisations and authorities which manage roads and spaces in the capital. But the TfL spokesperson said: `If the system works effectively I`m sure there will be interest in other parts of London.`
