Supermarkets` fridges amount to 25 per cent of their emissions
People conscious of their carbon footprint may be interested to hear that while fridges and freezers in supermarkets may keep food cold, they could also be contributing to global warming. A new survey has found that more than a quarter of supermarkets` carbon footprint comes from fridges and freezers. It is perhaps unsurprising that the biggest offender was freezer store Iceland, which scored minus one out of 100. The Environmental Investigation Agency`s Chilling Facts report highlighted the need for ten of the high street`s biggest food retailers to invest in carbon offsetting. Campaign coordinator Fionnuala Walravens explained that the hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HFC) gasses emitted by the units were particularly contributory to global warming. `The HFCs make up a quarter or more of a supermarket`s total carbon footprint, in some cases up to 30 per cent. And this is before you take the energy they use into account,` she told the newspaper. `To say their response has been lukewarm would be an understatement, although a few are beginning to address it. The biggest problem seems to be that climate-friendly fridges seem to require more highly-skilled engineers, and Marks amp; Spencer and Tesco are starting training programmes so they will have these.` Marks amp; Spencer finished top of the list with 42 points out of 100, while Tesco and Asda came second and third with 32 and 24 points respectively. The news comes on the same day that aviation was included in legislation regarding carbon trading.
